Off to the Tucson Desert!

Blogger Post 2 Comments »

Well, the 24 Hours of Old Pueblo are here already. This is always a fun race to kick off the new season. Not to worry, I have a little over a month break after this one… starting off slowly

24 Hour racing is cool because you get to the sun and moon at all phases of a 24 hour period.

When it’s overhead…

238-3
and when it sleepily sinks behind the horizon, you bring out the lights and tear down some singletrack. Nothing but your light and a blanket of darkness (and all the other crazy people riding!)

I’m racing a 5 person coed team under Topeak Ergon. It will be myself, Jeff Kerkove, Dave Wiens, Yuki Saito, and Rebecca Tomaszewski. That’ll be about 4 laps each. I was sick at this race last year, and we were short one person so it’s already a huge success! Braaaaaahhhp!

Look for a full report early next week!

Are we addicted to the digital world?

Blogger Post 6 Comments »

I have thought about the fact that we are all digital multi-taskers, and I am 100% guilty. In fact, I’m probably doing it right now! :) I have been making an effort to shut the computer, close facebook, close chat, turn off the TV(although I don’t watch much TV), put my phone on silent… even if it’s just for a couple hours a day (when I’m not riding my bike). Admittedly, it’s hard for me. Even on bike rides, I sometimes find myself checking my phone. Can we say it? ADDICT. Point finger. Digital addict.

We got the internet when I was in middle school. I used to email back and forth with my “soccerfreak13″ email and play Quake against my friend over the ‘net. I try to imagine what things were like for people one or two generation ahead of me, where they actually went through school/college, and even started their real job without cell phones or internet. I remember when I got my first cell phone. My family shared this brick of a phone while I was in high school, but in college I got my own.

I think that the ‘net keeps us more connected in a lot of ways. I mean, look at all of you wonderful readers I connect with, I look at the people I connect with on facebook and twitter, and it is HUGE. However, I wonder if the computer and the phone also disconnect us from those who are closest to us. Sure, we can be chatting with 3 or 4 people at once, updating our facebook status, writing a blog post, texting, and listening to a TV show, all at the tap tap of your fingertips on the keyboard. However, what about those people who are physically next to you? I believe that if we are unable to disconnect for at least some amount of time, we lose that very important personal interaction with our present flesh and blood friends. What about at dinner when you are texting, answering your phone, watching the news with your computer open at the coffee table?

The digital era has also commanded a new expectation from everyone around us. For example, if you take a vacation from your work, you are still expected to “check in” and be available over email. If you don’t answer your cell phone, people get frustrated. If you don’t answer a friend’s text in a timely manner, they think you’re mad at them… or in matters of love/flirtatious relationships, if your text goes unanswered, you get that lump in your throat thinking something is wrong. … but I do love texting! :)

I have been trying to embrace things I love that aren’t digital and hit the “pause” button (although clearly I spend way more time online than I do NOT online). Answer: partake in all the outdoor activities I love, play guitar, read books, write, go out with friends, organize, read more, focus more on one thing at a time, focus on deepening relationships with people I can look in the face when I talk to them. I’m still not very good at it, but I am making an effort to not lose myself (and someone like me who is very connected to my online community), well that’s difficult. On facebook, a lot of people said if they couldn’t get online, they’d go ride. I love all of our enthusiasm for our bikes, but you can take that to another level – are we addicted to our bikes? Shouldn’t there be other things in your life that you love as much as bike riding? That’s just a for instance. I might go to far as to say that as avid cyclists, we may lack the certain things that make us well-rounded (not condemning it, just thinking out loud). There’s nothing wrong with eat, ride, sleep, eat – but are we missing out on other very important life experiences? Probably.

What has provoked this post? A friend of mine actually posted this link on his facebook (oh, the irony! and the irony that it’s online!) but here it is. It is 1.5 hours, but you can watch it in segments if you don’t have the time. The segments are right above the box playing the show (it took me awhile to find that out).

Click here. I highly recommend watching part of it.

Makes those gears in my head spin furiously… how ’bout you?

Viva la weekend!

Well, it’s almost over, but at least I can watch my roommate jump up and down and scream at the TV when the SuperBowl is on. I’ve been watching and enjoying a bit of football this year, and part of it is because of the entertainment that my roommate provides. I will admit though… there have been times where I found myself screaming and hooting very spontaneously. Like, “Whoa! Did I just do that?”

Anyway… the weather went to snow to today, so I made my intervals count yesterday. Spent ample time riding uphill, and some time riding around my LT. The plan was to search and destroy (to a point). The cool thing was that by the end of the ride, I was still hungry for more!

At least I’ll be in Tuscon on Thursday for 24 Hours of Old Pueblo!

Vail!!!

Blogger Post No Comments »

I have lived in Colorado for 4 years and still had not skied Vail. I have raced my mountain bike there in the summer, but never on two skis!! Brad(my roommate) and I headed up there yesterday and I got to use a buddy pass (when you have a 5 mountain season pass, you get a limited number of buddy passes that give you like 30%+ off a day lift ticket)

Vail is one of the biggest ski areas out there. I was mesmerized by all the lifts and runs. It seemed to be like 3x the size of other ski resorts I have been to. We tackled some of the runs on the front side of the mountain, then went to the back side to ski some of the bowls. There was some good powder on the back, and I finally got over my fear of skiing in the trees (I also bought a ski helmet, which helped my confidence a little bit).

Skiing at Vail

It was snowing almost the whole time we were up there, meaning the light was flat. Unfortunately, you can’t see much texture in these photos (and also makes for tricky skiing on choppy powder runs when you can’t see any dimension!)

Going through the trees reminds me of maybe free-riding on the bike. You can pick and choose wherever you want to go.

Phew! Made it down this without killing myself. I am not very good at moguls, especially the black kind. That’s something I wish to master!

B-radical.

This crazy cloud encompassed the mountain, and you couldn’t see more than 30′ in front of you. It was like descending into an abyss.

My dorky self. :)

Skiing at Vail
One of the bowls had so much powder that if I didn’t make a ton of turns (vs traversing the run picking up speed and then turning), I’d get bogged down in the powder, my skis would disappear and I wouldn’t be able to turn. Should have opted for a fatter ski.

Shin deep!

It has been really nice doing other activities I love over the winter(like yoga, skiing, running). I’m hoping to get 4 more days on the mountain this year (for a whopping 6 days, which is the most I’ve done in one season). Considering my first race of the year is one week from TOMORROW, I’d say mixing bike racing with some skiing will be ok.

I’ve been starting to ramp things up a bit on the bike too. I tasted zone 5/super threshold for the first time since October the other day. It felt surprisingly good and I actually felt strong despite no previous interval training. The familiar taste of blood was present with each interval, followed by suffer cough later in the day. I need to go hard at least once before the race next weekend! I also enjoyed the endorphin buzz!

Speaking of riding, I better head out on the bike and up the mountain! Tonight is the Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance fundraiser banquet. I’m looking forward to that too. Last year was really fun!

Musica

Loving this song right now. Pearl Jam is so good. I like this song because it sounds like a mix between the Into the Wild Soundtrack, and a teeny bit of Pearl Jam.

I really love music. It takes you to that infinite dimension.

It feels great to be back home in Colorado! The one good thing about taking a week off the bike is how much more you appreciate it when you get to ride again.

I went back to old faithful this weekend – riding up to Gold Hill. It never disappoints!

P1319791

Still winter at higher elevations, but it’s been nice in town!

P1319789
Dropping down to the town.

P1319790
Et voila!

P1319792
The Continental Mountain Kings, although not studded, are still pretty good on the snow.

My pockets are always stuffed full when riding up the canyons in the winter. I always have a pair of warmer gloves, an extra jacket, an extra hat, and sometimes other stuff too. It always feels weird for the first warm rides in the spring/summer where you don’t feel like a pack mule.

Onward with quality training this week! Carpe Diem!

Stone Brewery

Blogger Post No Comments »

I went to Stone Brewery for the first time a couple years ago, and I loved it! As you could imagine, I jumped at the chance to stop by there for lunch a few days ago. We conveniently were driving to San Diego for dealer visits from LA and were hitting that area right around lunch time.

stone

The thing I think is really cool about Stone is that everything there is really nicely done. They have a lush garden in the back, a trailhead right next to the brewery, their menu serves top notch ingredients, and everything there is clean and modern. I didn’t do a brew tour this time (but I did last time).

Jeff and I enjoyed lunch in the garden.

P1299750

They had a long beer menu…it was so hard to choose just one!

IMG_0883

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my Colorado Breweries, but I can appreciate other ones. Stone and Deschutes are some out of state favorites.

P1299755

I got a glass of the Stone Cali-Belgique IPA. I have never had this one from Stone, or noticed it anywhere. It was really good! HERE are some notes from Beer Advocate on it. I enjoyed it a lot! I also couldn’t leave Stone without doing a taster of the Oaked Arrogant Bastard. A taster was enough for me. I’m not a huge fan of this beer for some reason (it seems like people love it!). I figure if I keep trying it, I’ll appreciate it more. That’s how I started to like IPA and now I love it.

Now, onto the food. I usually try to make very healthy choices when I go out to eat, but this time, I simply couldn’t pass it up. I had an internal struggle, and the glutton in me won. Read the description. I love the smoked porter and I love cheese… how could I refuse?

P1299753
I think their menu is a bit on the pricey side, but oh well.

P1299754
It was delicious and very rich. Good thing I had Jeff there to help me eat this. You could really taste the beer in the aftertaste.

P1299756
I have a feeling this place is always busy!

P1299757
I mean, they have growler refill parking spots!

Then, it was onward to San Diego.

Sorry for the long silence.  I was on the go go go for a week, but finally have a few spare minutes to have at it with the blog.  I had never spent longer than one day in the LA area, so it was fun to see the area in full force.

Here is a photo recap of things that caught my eye.

Stopped at Stone Brewery for lunch! One of my top 5 favorite breweries! This will get its own post. :)

I was off the bike for 6 days, which was a good break for my knee. It still feels a little weird (I got to ride yesterday), but it isn’t hurting and I am still taking care of it. The first race of the year is in 2 weeks. It’ll be more training for me since I just finished my base! It’s in Tucson (we went last year)… looking forward to riding singletrack!!

Where the pavement ends.

Blogger Post 5 Comments »

This week has been a bump in the road for training. My knee started hurting on Thursday in a really bad way. I can train through uncomfortable knee pain, but I know when I need to stop. Out of the blue, my knee went from feeling perfectly fine to shockingly painful… so I went home and took a few days off. Last year, I had this kind of pain, but it would twinge every once in awhile for a second. This time, it was every pedal stroke. I’m guessing it’s tendinitis of some kind, because I am very prone to it. Today, Saturday, it felt fine so I headed out on the bike for 2 hours… especially because I’ll be off the bike for the next 6 days.

Sometimes, where the pavement ends is where the real journey begins… it can be a journey of the outdoors, or a journey of the mind.  There’s a reason we love to ride our bikes or be active, and part of it is the processing and cleansing of our minds.

photo(5)

When I can’t ride singletrack, I’ll take gravel roads. Today was really beautiful. It was windy and chilly, and the light was amazing. I barely even noticed that I was fighting a headwind because I was so in awe of the beauty around me that is so easily overlooked.   The sun was shining, and the light seemed very white and clear. I smiled to myself because I felt happy and alive, and best of all, thankful for everything in my life. I have been trying really hard not to take things, moments, and people for granted, because the truth is you never really know how much time you have in that moment…whether it be on your bike, with a friend or family member, doing something exciting and new.  In high school, I was a huge fan of the Transcendentalists. …particularly Thoreau (and Walden). “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life…” insightful.

photo(4)

I am trying hard to live deeply.  It’s so easy to get caught up in being busy that we put our heads down and just get it done.  I mean, sometimes you have to.  I’ve been trying to live with intention more often and not be on autopilot.  Doing more than just breathing in and breathing out, but savoring what I’ve got.  Anyways…

My knee didn’t hurt at all on the ride today.  Funny how something like an injury can make you appreciate a simple 2 hour zone 2 ride when just the week before I was thinking, “Ugh… no more!  e.g. the Carter Lake day”   Unfortunately, my knee twinged again when I went from a sitting to a standing position from the floor this evening. So weird… It’s back to feeling fine. R.I.C.E. for now. I have forced time off the bike which is actually a good thing due to the injury (not so good that I rode my bike 5 hours total this week, but what can do, eh?) After all, it’s still winter time!

So! I am off to LA in the morning. To quote Pretty Woman, “Welcome to Hollywood!! What’s your dream?! What’s your dream?!”  I have many dreams!  Jeff and I will be doing a lot of bike shop visits around the LA area. It’s going to be busy, but a great way to see SoCal. I’m just excited to see and HEAR the ocean, dig my toes in the sand, and feel the waves wash over my ankles.

I’ll try to get some sort of update to ya from the big CA.  See ya on the west coast!
